The main objective of speech is to:
- Help students develop their speaking voices and skills in oral interpretation.
- Help students enter into the world of literature and to communicate this world to an audience.
- Develop students’ poise, self-confidence, and self-worth through public speaking.
Speech Practices• Practices will be held after school. All speech events are required to attend at least ONE practice per week.
• Please note that the majority of students’ work will take place on their own time. Students are expected to be comfortable with their materials and have their parts completely memorized by Speech Preview Night. |
Speech Preview NightSpeech Preview Night
This evening will allow students the opportunity to deliver their pieces to a live audience before contest as well as allowing parents with multiple students participating and/or schedule conflicts a chance to see all students perform before contest. |
Speech ContestThe culmination of this hard work and dedication is participation in the regional speech contest. All students who participate are required to attend the IESA Speech Contest.

Speech Events Performance Descriptions:
· Solo Acting: a dramatic presentation by an individual student. · Impromptu Speaking*: the student will be given two words or phrases from the judge and will choose one. The student will then have a specified amount of time to compose and present the speech. · Duet Acting: a humorous or serious presentation with direct dialogue or conversation between two contestants portraying no more than two characters. · Improv Duet Acting*: The duet will be given two humorous prompts and one serious prompt. The students must use the prompts to start their scene. · Small Group Acting: a serious or humorous presentation by three to five performers characterizing three or more persons presenting one selection. · Team Improv*: The team comprising of four to six students will be gien three different improvisation games to be played in two minute intervals. *In order to perform any improvised speech events, students must also perform one of the above scripted events. • Video Examples of Speech Events: http://iesa.org/multimedia/SP_Examples/presentation.html |
